PennDOT held an open house this week to reveal plans for much-needed improvements on U.S. 1 between Old Lincoln Highway and the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Bensalem.
The first phase of the project, labeled RC1, is set to begin in early 2018. PennDOT will reconstruct and widen U.S. 1 as well as improve three structurally-deficient bridges across that area.
That means one or more components of the bridge are identified to be in “poor condition” by PennDOT.
The bridges slated for improvement are U.S. 1 over Street Road, U.S. 1 over the Pennsylvania Turnpike and U.S. 1 over the ramps to the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
Also included in the first phase of the project is the replacement of the Bristol Road bridge over U.S. 1. An existing bridge that currently carries U.S. 1 over a closed private access road between the Pennsylvania Turnpike interchange and the Neshaminy/Rockhill Drive interchange will be removed, according to information from PennDOT.
“If anything’s going to cause any sort of traffic consternation it will be the detour of Bristol Road,” said PennDOT engineer Tim Stevenson. “We’re going to be maintaining traffic along Route 1 and Street Road while we’re doing the reconstruction”
The Bristol Road detour would take motorists around the bridge using Neshaminy Boulevard, Rockhill Drive and Old Lincoln Highway.
PennDOT officials said traffic along Route 1 and Street Road should not be dramatically affected as much of the construction will take place off peak hours. The project will also create some space between Street Road entrance onto U.S. 1 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike interchange, an area where traffic complaints are common.
The subsequent phases of the project, which are not timelined yet, will include more bridge replacements and improvements to U.S. 1 north of Bensalem through Langhorne.
Construction for RC1 is expected to be completed in early 2019, and will cost around $85 million.
