During a special meeting on Thursday, Bensalem School Board chose a replacement for the Rev. Jason Harris, who resigned his position on the board toward the end of September.
Three candidates applied for the position and were interviewed during the meeting by current members of the board. They asked about schedule availability, volunteer work with the schools and their occupations.
Ultimately, the board chose David Rizzo, a retired owner of a wholesale lighting and electrical supplies sales company.
“I now have plenty of time to donate to this,” Rizzo told the board. “It’s my wish to encourage student achievement.”
Rizzo is a former baseball coach for the Bensalem Ramblers and former golf coach at Bensalem Country Club.
He was nominated and voted in by five members of the board. Another candidate received a nomination, but no other votes.
Rizzo was sworn in during the meeting by Judge Raymond F. McHugh right after the board’s vote. He will hold the seat until the term expires on Dec. 5, 2017, when he would have to run for reelection to keep the position.
Rizzo was appointed to the board’s business affairs committee.
“I’ve been wanting to do this for years,” he said.
